I love how the Baroque glass used in the river looks. This panel almost didn't make it as I had quite a calamity in my shop, due to a highly curious small child. But I picked up the pieces so to speak and moved on with the project. Lucky for me I still had enough of the glass I'd intended to use for this project left. I think it turned out pretty well all things considered.
This panel will be a gift for a friend whose birthday is coming up and also was my dog sitter for an extended vacation. Believe me, it was definitely earned.

Etching Bevels

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/TTxJEF3Q1BI/AAAAAAAAA2Q/FmN7y6zP5-s/s320/January%2B2011%2B011.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5565403574165361682" />
Occasionally it's fun to etch an image onto glass, this can be done as a stand alone ornament (as shown here) or it can also be used in a stained glass panel simply by foiling or leading around the etching and adding to a stained glass design.

Etching is fairly simple. You can use a photograph, as shown, or simply draw your design freehand. Even with a photograph you will find that while it's helpful for outlining your subject and placement of features, the underlying photo will be consistantly covered with glass dust. With that being said, it's often easier for me to use the photo as a guide for creating the initial sketch, but performing the details of the piece freehand. You will also want to work with a dark piece of fabric, a piece of dark construction paper or other dark material under the piece of glass so that you may easily be able to see what you are drawing.

A few safety concerns, you will want to use a dust mask while working with etching, particularly if you will be using an electric etching tool. Some people have devised methods of a water drip or dust collectors to remove the glass particles from the work areas.

I use a Dremel tool with a flex shaft attachment to etch with. Google www.Dremel.com for more information regarding the attachments and supplies you can purchase. There are a variety of tools that will do the job, from hand scribes to dental drills. It's another interesting and fun way to dabble with glass. So grab a piece of glass and etch away..you never know it could be habit forming!

One good site to learn more about etching is this one: www.lesleypyke.com

Ms. Pyke creates very outstanding art on glass and her site holds a wealth of knowledge. She may also be found on Facebook.

Final Lit Image of TailGate's Sign

<img style="display:block; The sign is TailGate, which is a restaurant/pub located not far from my shop. It was going to be hung in a fairly dark environment so I felt it would be best to make it into a lit shadowbox. The shadowbox would better display the stained glass.

The box is made of 3"x 1" pine, with supports just inside the front to hold the glass in place. The glass is held in place in the front with clear plastic cabinet clips placed at or very near the solder joints. There is an 31" LED light installed in the top of the shadowbox to illuminate the panel. It's always a good idea when building a panel that is intended to be placed in a shadowbox to use an opal type glass around the outside edges of the glass at least. In this case the entire project was made with opal glass. This way you will not be able to easily view the light source.

I made a hinged back to go on this box so that the owner would easily be able to access the interior of the shadowbox to change the light source out. I also painted the interior of the box white to further diffuse the light.

I hope you enjoy seeing this latest project! I finally got around to creating the panel. I think it turned out quite well. The diameter of the piece is 13" x 18", I used Youghiogheny glass in it primarily, maybe a little Spectrum and other scraps of other manufacturers I had hanging around. It's framed in a fairly wide leaf lead, and the hangers are actually a sling that goes from the left hook around the bottom of the piece and attached at the point that the right side hook is attached. The leaf of the lead is then burnished to fold in on itself. It's a safer alternative for hanging a round or oval panel that has a lead frame, as lead stretches.

Here are a couple of new designs

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 258px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/TLt4SEK3tNI/AAAAAAAAA08/yEf16xRzCRI/s320/Portland+Head+Color.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529145219279729874" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/TLt4R1lAzzI/AAAAAAAAA0w/0zozaKZo0e0/s320/My+Maine+Man.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529145215362846514" />
One is a sight frequently seen in the Maine woods, Mr. Moose. It is one of the, if not the, most photographed lighthouse in the U.S. I took many pictures the day I visited Fort Williams Park, which is where the lighthouse is located. Mind you that my plating involved reflection of mountains in water and the sun, and leaves on the birch tree. And also I'll qualify this by telling you that I don't do plating all that often, in fact, this is probably the first, but definitely not the last panel I'll plate.

I will give you this tip, when plating finish your panel completely, apply patina, clean and polish PRIOR to adding your plating. You will not be able to clean between the pieces of plating and the panel after it's put together. And many artists that use plating frequently will tell you that all edges of the plating need to be soldered so that nothing can creep under the plating..dust, etc. This I did not do on this panel as there was nothing to solder to the 3/4ths of the sun and also a portion of the water was not solderable.

I'll let the photo's speak for themselves, but am always open to questions.

Artisan's of Glass "Spring Forward" Art Contest

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/S9My9fjl5xI/AAAAAAAAAyU/1IgZx6gOoBc/s200/Katahdin+Spring+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463766804954736402" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 193px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/S9My9MIQGbI/AAAAAAAAAyM/UdkDGoqIBkE/s200/Katahdin+Spring+1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463766799739787698" />
Artisan's of Glass, a stained glass forum, which I am proud to be a member and moderator of is currently holding a contest for cold and hot glassers that are members with a required number of posts. There is certain criteria that needs to be met for both categories of glass art. I submitted my photo of my contest project today, the judging will be held after April 30th and wonderful prizes are to be awarded to the first two places of both categories I believe.

My entry was entitled "Katahdin Spring". Mt. Katahdin is well known as the Northern most end of the Apalachian Trail (which begins in Georgia) and is located in North Central Maine, in a state park by the name of Baxter State Park. One of the Governors of Maine, Percival Baxter, purchased 6,000 acres there at first and gave it to the people of our state with one stipulation, that it always be left forever wild. Katahdin is 5,268 feet high, not huge as mountain ranges go, but is the tallest mountain in our state. There are 200 trails located in Baxter State Park, and they are maintained each year by volunteers and 3 state park employees.

Some of the criteria I used in this project involves plating (which is applying separate pieces of glass to either the front or back (or both) sides of a panel) Plating is used frequently in stained glass to achieve color change or the folds of drapery (clothing)or shading in different portions of a window. The mountain reflection, sun and leaves of the birch are all plated areas. I also added a Non-glass feature, by using polished stones around the pond in the panel. There is some decorative soldering there, as well as the use of 14 ga copper wire for the birch tree branches.

I hope that you enjoy viewing it, as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Etching Glass

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/S9MwR0Xfb3I/AAAAAAAAAyA/Oyfx2wjAoug/s200/Pit+Bull+Etching.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5463763855603625842" />
This is a fairly new venture for me..I've done a few pieces on occasion..a small etching of a motorcycle and horses running, but finally sat down to play with it again recently.
As everyone who knows me well is aware, I am a Pit Bull lover..I was dragged into it somewhat by my children, but now have four of them and love them all dearly. But none deserve to be painted by the Breed Specific Legislation brush.
That rant being said, here is my latest etching..it's not great, it isn't even very good, but I promise to learn more about this art and do a better job the next time.
Actually, I found a very good site that may be used as a resource for glass etching and it may be seen at: http://www.lesleypyke.com/page/Glass%20Engraving%20-%20The%20Drill%20Technique.htm Lesley is an incredible artist, and I hope that you enjoy her site as much as I have.

The Range Man

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 184px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/S0nsBjWUmZI/AAAAAAAAAw0/oBICaMuSoWI/s200/Rangeman.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5425126737557363090" />
This is actually a pattern of one of my beloved pets. We just had a great time! Our main focus of this trip was to get to Wissmach Glass in Paden City, W Va, and also to Youghiogheny Glass in Connellsville, PA. But of course it's not a road trip if you don't manage to fit just about everything into it. So we also stopped at the Flight 93 crashsite in Schencksville, PA,(very sad..let us not forget their heroism that day.) We went to Pittsburgh and had a very nice dinner at the Church Brew Works, which is a very old church in Pittsburgh that was going to be torn down until someone bought it, had it desanctified and made into a brew pub. We didn't manage to get there during the daylight hours..so sadly we got no pics of the stained glass windows. All the same it was a nice place to visit. And we got out of Pittsburgh just in time..we found out that evening that the G20 Conference was going to be held in the Convention center (which we drove by that night.) Imagine, a couple of days later and we'd have missed that opportunity.
We also visited Fallingwater, which is a Frank Lloyd Wright designed home built over a stream. Fallingwater is located in Mill Run, PA and is well worth the visit. It is just beautiful there. The Pennsylvania Conservancy now owns and operates the tours of the home. It was built for the Kaufmann's who owned the largest department stores in Pittsburgh (which later became Macys)but I digress. Mrs. Kaufmann also was a Tiffany collector and there are many pieces of Tiffany on display in the house. I was in awe, as during my genealogy search I found that I am distantly related to Mr. Wright (7th cousins)so it was truly an honor to be able to see one of his houses.
Last but definitely not least, we did get to Wissmach and met some extremely nice people, including Mark, the owner of Wissmach Glass. They were kind enough to show us the way to the glass they had available for sale and we even received an impromptu tour of the glass making. All together a wonderful visit and that we enjoyed very much. I wanted to take it all home with me..but sadly there's only so much you can fit into the back of a Jeep Liberty.
We also visited Youghiogheny, unfortunately we were in such a hurry most days we forgot (I forgot) to call and reserve time for a tour, but we did get to see the Youghiogheny store and purchase glass there. Such beautiful glass, many beautiful and reasonably priced items in their gift shop. I'm ready to move there just to be closer to all of this absolutely lovely glass!
Needless to say we were in glassers heaven. I'll post pictures of what I bought soon.

De

The Cattails

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/StHhOaoPeiI/AAAAAAAAAtc/IARw8rs-jSc/s320/Cattails.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5391337866721720866" />

Living in an area that has lots of water and lots of cattails I just had to design this one. And it's one that I will no doubt make as I'd just love to look at it (until it's sold of course!) This will be made into a fairly large round panel, I'm thinking about 30" in diameter. And of course I just got back from a glass shopping trip where I purchased some of the most beautiful Youghiogheny glass that will be just perfect for this panel! More about that trip later.

Hope you enjoy the cattail project! The Depot gives the buyer the opportunity to browse through the patterns and purchase them to make your own stained glass art! There is an option to purchase the patterns using Paypal, however, if you aren't comfortable or do not have a Paypal account you may contact us directly and we'll certainly work with you to make other arrangements for purchase.

We are offering patterns that we have created to date, and will be adding more as they are created. We'd also like to offer that if you don't see something that is just what you are looking for please don't hesitate to contact either of us for a custom design. We would both be very pleased to do our best to create the design of your dreams.

We are able to email these patterns directly to you, one full color pattern and one black and white, numbered format. So it will be a speedy transaction and you will have the patterns very quickly and can get started. You will only need to have them enlarged to whatever size you desire.

Please don't hesitate to contact either Kev or myself if you have any questions regarding a particular pattern or are looking for a specific design. We'd be only too happy to help you or answer your questions.

And above all, enjoy perusing our site, and please drop us a comment to let us know you were there and not only what you liked, but what you may think we could improve upon. Plus, I actually love creating these patterns!
Hope you all enjoy the Polo Pony pattern. They actually aren't ponies, but that's what they're referred to on the polo field. We do have a pretty active polo group up here, which holds it's games not far from where I live. I used to ride with them when they trained inside at a local indoor arena...my horse would NOT have made the team. LOL. It is a very exciting, rugged sport, with game riders and horses!

Enjoy! This panel is of copper foil construction, with an adj. There's a nice story attached to this one, that just proves that you can come up with a design from some pretty neat objects. My student, Sharon, found an old copper planter at an auction she went to and purchased. The exterior of the copper planter had this embossed image on the exterior, which she thought was interesting. So she made a rubbing of it and brought it to the shop. She wondered if she could make a stained glass design from it. "Why not?" I said. And so we did. I think it turned out very well and she now has this piece proudly hanging at home!

Way to go with creativity Sharon!

Dragonfly Software/Glass Eye "Design of the Month"

Hello All,

I just can't believe it, but a design that I created and manufactured (Porsche 911) for a client was selected as Dragonfly Software's "Design of the Month". Dragonfly Software created a wonderful program called Glass Eye 2000. Glass Eye 2000 is the software that I now create many of my designs with. It's functionality is amazing, it's a very quick to learn program and has enhanced my ability to design, make changes, email designs to clients, etc. As you can tell, I just love it and feel that it's given my creativity wings! If you are interested in viewing the write up, just go to WWW.DFLY.COM and double click the blue button "Design of the Month".
BTW, when you visit their site you may also download a free trial of Glass Eye so that you may try it for yourself. I can't say enough positive things about how much fun it is to use!
My design should be the focal design for the month of April and then will be seen on their site as a past design, as they keep them on for an indefinite period of time.
I am so pleased and excited that they felt that my design was worthy of this honor!
Thanks for listening!

De

Salsa anyone?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/SbPTxrJ3bPI/AAAAAAAAAiA/1n-r_UhBhUo/s320/Salsa+Dance.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5310821235951103218" />
And I don't mean the type you eat with Taco Chips! I've been taking Salsa dance classes for the past month and a half..what a great experience. I'd highly recommend that if you enjoy dancing to go to your local dance studio and take some Salsa lessons. It will be your next new and very enjoyable exercise program! I love everything about this dance, the music just invites your feet to move. And it's taking off in my area..just ask the Salsa Mafia! Those of you who are real died in the wool horse types may like these.
I must admit that now that I've gotten started I feel that I may be headed to putting together another book...not that it will be a best seller or anything...but it will be fun to do!

I've never felt that there were realistic enough patterns out there to satisfy me. Being a life long (or nearly) horse person I was always looking for specific breeds, a horse was not just a horse...four legs and a tail. I wanted certain characteristics. So I decided that perhaps I should take the task on of seeing how realistic I could get with glass, that wasn't an un-doable project.

I hope I'm getting there, but you guys can leave comments and let me know how I'm doing.

That being said..I would prefer that no one copy these designs...or contact me if you have interest in that pattern.

Current Student Art at PGW's

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/SV_JS2pbiBI/AAAAAAAAAYU/zpMWbxaRJdU/s320/Student+work+in+progress.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287165813300365330" />
This nice piece is appropriate, since we live in Maine and are surrounded by towering Pine Trees! Sharon has been a student at PGW's for about 2 years and she has just created some fabulous art glass pieces, three dimensional items and some very originally designed artworks. It is Dressage horse central! Loved my visit there and really enjoyed meeting the people and watching the Dressage show. I just couldn't wait to come home and try my hand and recreating the photo using Glass Eye 2000. Several other members who are hugely talented design artists have also created pattern books that are currently for sale on Lulu.com. If you haven't checked this site out please do.

But I digress, it occurred to me that since I particularly enjoy designing, and animals seem to be my design subjects of choice I put together a compilation of dog breeds. The book is called "Pinnacle Pups" Best of Show 2008 and the link to preview it is: http://www.lulu.com/browse/preview.php?fCID=4400661

This book contains the top 10 dog breeds for the year 2008, plus a few that are not in the top ten but that I'm particularly fond of. Some are dogs I've grown up with, friends dogs and our current breed of choice, The American Staffordshire Terrier. I certainly hope that everyone enjoys these patterns just as much as I enjoyed creating them. I'd like to think that they are some of the more realistic depictions of the dog breeds that have ever been created in stained glass.

Let me know your thoughts! It will be on display there for one month. It is there for display only as I've donated a Gift Certificate to help raise money to keep the farm as a free space and open to our community.

"Yesterday I received an email from the President of Skyline Farm letting me know that one of the artists liked my work...this is her email!

Yesterday one of our best artists, Beth Carlson, came to view the exhibit,
because she couldn't make it to the opening. She stopped at your stained
glass piece and looked at the photo and said what a wonderful job you had
done! I thought it would mean a lot coming from another artist.

Actually I think your high bid so far is from an artist :-)"

Congratulations (and thank you),
Pam

Needless to say I was thrilled, as Ms. Carlson is a well known artist in horse and dog circles, has had her paintings published as cover art for national horse and dog magazines and several of her paintings are now owned by the American Kennel Club Museum and The National Bird Dog Museum. If you'd like to learn more about Beth please click on the link in the previous post for Skyline Farm.

I was definitely doing the happy dance after reading this email!

Fine Art Show and Sale to Benefit Skyline Farm

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_ZMaGUUP-5j8/SMxKbHSvSWI/AAAAAAAAASk/oyfAzd7McpU/s320/Skyline+Farm+Art+2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5245649495654353250" />
I was invited to donate an item to the silent auction for Skyline Farm. Which is a non profit group who have purchased in the effort to save a beautiful North Yarmouth farm from being purchased and subdivided into house lots. Many local children learned to ride when Skyline was a riding stable...myself included...and have very fond memories of the horses that taught us!
This show contains an exceptional display of a variety of oils, pastels, metal work, among other items included in it. I donated a $100.00 gift certificate for a commissioned piece of stained glass...I'm also hoping that this will give me some name recognition in the process. It is my hope that Skyline's silent auction will help them raise much needed funds to keep this outstanding piece of property available for horseback & carriage riding, dog activities and just the enjoyment of the trail system that Skyline provides.
You may learn more about Skyline Farm, and their upcoming events at the following link.

http://www.skylinefarm.org/images/artshowcat08WEB.pdf

Some Repairs!

I have been fortunate to work on some very interesting repairs and beautifying some old pieces that have been totally transformed after repairs.
